Basic Page Content Type

What is a Basic Page?

The Basic Page is arguably the most fundamental content type. It serves as the basic building block for your website, and is utilized to create static, informational web pages that don't require complex interactivity. These pages typically provide key content for your website.

Unlike more dynamic content types (e.g., Articles, which may include comments or tagging), Basic Pages are designed to provide clean, focused content, making them ideal for pages that are more fundamentally informational. They can also be configured with custom fields, menus, and other settings to integrate seamlessly into your site's structure. As the backbone of most standard websites, they allow for quick and straightforward page creation without the need for complex features.

How to use the Basic Page

Step 1: Adding a Basic Page

  • On the Content page, click the Add content button.
  • You will see a list of available content types, including Basic page and other types (e.g., Article).
  • Click Basic page.

Step 2: Creating the Basic Page

You will now see the form to create a new Basic page. Here are the main fields and options:

  • Title: Enter the title of your page. This title will also appear in the browser’s title bar and may be used in navigation menus depending on your theme.
  • Body: This is the main content area where you can enter text, images, or media. You can format this using the WYSIWYG editor (What You See Is What You Get) provided. It supports rich formatting such as bold, italic, lists, and more.
  • Menu Settings (Optional): If you want this page to appear in a site menu (such as the main navigation), you can click the "Provide a menu link" checkbox.
  • URL Alias (Optional): You can manually specify a URL alias for the page by expanding the URL alias field. For example, you might enter /about for an "About Us" page. If left blank, Drupal will automatically generate a URL based on the page title.
  • Moderation State Options:
    • Draft: If selected, the page will not be visible to public users once saved
    • Published: If selected, the page will be visible to public users once saved.
    • Archived: If selected, the page will not be visible to public users once saved. This moderation state is utilized to preserve content in the backend for review or future reference, but it does not actively live on the site.

Step 3: Save the Page

  • Click Save at the bottom of the page.
  • If the page is published, it will now be live on your site and accessible at the URL alias you’ve set (or the automatically generated one if you left it blank).
